Cheryl’s Story: Finding Support at Dunbar ASN

Hi, my name is Cheryl. I have a six-year-old boy who was born with spina bifida and has a diagnosis of autism.

I first heard about Dunbar ASN through a friend about three years ago, so I decided to go along to one of their family groups. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and my little boy had a ball.

Everything started from there. After attending the family groups, I began going to the Friday meet-ups for parents, which I didn’t even know were available at the time. The information I gathered from other parents was amazing. I found out about the different services available out there, and the support itself has been wonderful. Having people to talk to who are going through the exact same thing has helped me so much.

I am now a Trustee for the charity, which is an amazing thing to be part of.

I want to be there to help people who are struggling and to offer the same advice and support that I received when I first started going to the group. Having this service in Dunbar is fantastic, and I don’t know what I would have done without it. Having that support for myself has been so good, and I want to see the charity continue to grow and achieve so much more.
